Operation RAILSAFE

A Regional Alliance Including Local, State And Federal Efforts

Operation RAILSAFE was developed in partnership by the Amtrak Police Department, New York City Police Department and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Amtrak Police, TSA personnel and law enforcement officers from federal, state, local, rail and transit agencies deploy at passenger rail and transit stations, and along the right-of-way, to exercise counterterrorism and incident response capabilities. This coordinated effort involves activities such as heightened station and right-of-way patrols, increased security presence onboard trains, explosives detection canine sweeps, random passenger bag inspections, and counter-surveillance.

Operation RAILSAFE Partner Training

The Operation RAILSAFE training program will strengthen coordination and integration between Amtrak Police partners (e.g. emergency responders, host railroads, transit agencies, law enforcement officials, municipalities, etc.) and improve the safety and security of passengers, employees, and infrastructure from acts of terrorism.

Specifically, Operation RAILSAFE training will:

  • Provide participating agencies, first responders and other Amtrak stakeholders with situational awareness and a better understanding of how to protect Amtrak’s passengers, employees, and critical infrastructure from acts of terrorism;
  • Decrease Amtrak’s risk from and vulnerability to a potential attack by enhancing situational awareness of critical assets, establishing interoperability, sharing resources, providing an overview of Rail safety, and promoting partnership opportunities with like agencies; and
  • Aid anti-terrorism efforts designed to protect the Amtrak employees, passengers, trains and infrastructure and maximize resource planning and allocation, as well as establish and maintain critical relationships with partner agencies.
